Safety Ambassadors

What is a Safety Ambassador?
Our Safety Ambassador initiative is a programme devised by EPC-UK to raise the profile of behavioural effects and encourage employees to take greater responsibility for their own safety, as well as that of those around them.
#Safety
Our current team of 14 Ambassadors are working hard to embed behavioural safety and our core values throughout the company, developing an “employee ownership of safety” and encouraging a “blame free” work environment.
“The Safety Ambassadors have been pivotal in the rollout of our company’s SPIRIT Values and its Behavioural Safety Model. With the help of the Safety Ambassadors, we’re able to further promote EPC-UK’s safety messaging, enhance its safety culture and give a voice to employees, together with a platform to bring ideas and improvements to the company. This ownership and inclusion has been central to the success of our behavioural safety initiative to date.”
Keith Ward – Learning Development Coordinator
Safety success
Effective communication, including frequent interactions amongst our workforce and stakeholders is vital to continually improving our safety culture. As Safety Ambassadors, one of our key responsibilities is the organisation of company-wide annual Safety Kick-off Briefings.
These dedicated safety sessions, designed to encourage every employee to take the time to consider the important of safety, are proving to be a great success for EPC-UK, uniting the entire workforce in our safety goal and giving the Esprit d’Equipe initiative.
“We all have to do our part to help each other stay safe and ensure the continuance of our Esprit d’Equipe mission. This means letting each other know what is expected, and what is needed to safely conduct our operations”.
Ryan Ward – Commercial Manager
The briefings comprise of a variety of safety related activities including:
- Presentation from a Safety Ambassador
- Presentation from Senior Management
- Presentation from a Site Manager
- Live explosives awareness demonstrations
- Hazard spotting
- Driving with visual impairment
- An interactive Q&A session
These briefings are making a real difference to the safety culture within the company. In 2018 alone the number of near misses and unsafe conditions reported fell by a third compared to 2017.
Sharing our values
Safety is not a ‘buzz’ word for EPC-UK, it is intrinsic to everything we do. We are constantly looking at how we can make our employees and the environments in which they work safer. These Kick-off Briefings arm our employees with the tools they need to be safer and are a strong foundation on which we can build constantly throughout the year.”
