EPC Groupe performs in partnership to deliver new Blasting Diploma

Feb 26, 2024

The Diploma in Surface Mining Explosives Engineering that EPC Groupe has worked to produce, in collaboration with the Institute of Quarrying and University of Derby, is now close to being finalised. It will be ready for delivery later in 2024 and further details will follow soon.

The diploma programme, which focuses on enhancing professionalism, safety and competence within the explosives products and services sector, is a progressive, industry-led qualification. It has been designed to help up-skill the drilling & blasting industry and set an international standard for the explosives sector. Studying for the diploma will set learners on a ‘pathway to industry’ at level 5 and offer the potential for them to specialise further within the mining sector.

Digital delivery

Delivery of the new qualification will be predominantly online for ‘work schedule compatibility’ and will take approximately 12 months to complete. Made up of online assessments and tutorials, it is suitable for anyone progressing their expertise in the explosives products and services sector.

An altruistic approach

“I’m proud of EPC Groupe’s collaborative work in developing educational materials for our industry which are designed to be shared through bodies, including the MPQC (Minerals Products Quality Council), IQ (Institute of Quarrying) and IExpE (Institute of Explosive Engineers),” EPC-UK’s Managing Director and Chairperson of the Institute of Quarrying, Ben Willliams says. “As a principal user of commercial explosives in the UK and key sector employer, we feel we have a responsibility to update and educate our industry with course material that can be licenced by the Minerals Products Qualification Council, allowing other commercial entities, as well as our own, to deliver effective, consistently reviewed, high-quality content.”

Team commitment

“I would like to express my gratitude to Chris Rowan from the University of Derby for his work and commitment to the project,” Ben adds, “and also to our wider EPC Groupe and the role their Training Service Manager, Javier Munoz, has played in helping to realise the completed course.”

Further information

The revised Explosives in Quarrying Handbook, launched at the end of 2023, supports the forthcoming Blasting Diploma and provides a complementary learning material for all the EPC-UK delivered blasting courses. To register course interest, email the IQ.
