We felt privileged this month to be runner up for the ‘Company of the Year’ Award at this year’s IExpE’s 2022 Fulmination Awards ceremony, in addition to receiving two individual top three nominations at the event which took place at the beginning of April.
EPC-UK’s Head of Explosives Engineering, Dr. Rob Farnfield was nominated and placed in the top three for Innovator of the Year. Equally, General Manager Blasting and Explosives, Ben Coppock was also considered a top three nominee for Manager of the Year; and excitingly EPC-UK as a whole was positioned as runner up for Company of the Year 2022.
‘Innovator of the Year – presented to an individual who has introduced new methods, ideas or products to the industry.’
Nominee Rob is regarded industry wide as a foremost expert within the explosives sector. In addition, he is a highly respected colleague who over the course of a 40-year career has come to epitomise EPC-UK’s ‘Innovation’ SPIRIT value. By demonstrating this core quality in practice, alongside the supporting principles of Safety, Passion, Integrity, Respect and Teamwork, Rob has been acknowledged through the Fulmination Awards programme for his success in innovating and implementing our inventive hybrid detonator technology. His hybrid system is now recognised throughout the sector and used across the UK explosives industry, making the blasting environment safer and more cost effective.
Blast optimisation – Rob’s research and expertise, also observed through the award process, have both been integral to advancing the use of high-speed cameras on blast optimisation. This is an area in which he has played a pivotal role within the UK quarry environment, where sites are considered different to many international comparisons due to the UK’s dense population, unique geology and ground conditions.
Planning to comply – In addition, the ‘planning to comply’ models Rob has produced for highly stringent planning controls in Leicestershire, and more recently his work with the engineering team on developing digital danger zone modelling, further served to secure his place as an innovator worthy of top three award nomination.
‘Manager of the Year’ – presented to the most inspirational manager whose team has made a significant contribution to the industry.’
Ben Coppock was nominated within the top three for Manager of the Year as a result of the exceptional managerial expertise he has demonstrated throughout his career, and notably through the recent period of adversity shaped by the Covid-19 pandemic. Ben too has worked to ensure that the EPC-UK SPIRIT values have been consistently evident in his working practice, to employees and senior management alike.
A managerial role model – We believe that Ben’s achievements and the example he has set as a managerial role model have contributed significantly to EPC-UK’s recognised reputation as being a leader in our field. During times of uncertainty, and when maintaining safety standards was of paramount concern, Ben prioritised the wellbeing of his workforce, made effective communication a business-critical operation, and sought out new business opportunities for the company to advance in an operational environment altered by the pandemic.
Supporting teams to progress – In securing a top three place nomination, Ben’s tenacity in supporting the team and ensuring business operations could progress to meet customers’ needs has been deservedly acknowledged. From our own perspective, we feel Ben’s contribution to EPC-UK has served to make our company even more focussed on employee wellbeing, customer service and industry progression and we’re delighted his achievements have been recognised.
‘Company of the Year’
